Storyline

“Assad is a cause, not a cure for ISIL” - the UK Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond said to the press after a meeting with representatives of Syrian National Coalition on the sidelines of the Security Council session dedicated to terrorism.

Hammond explained that Assad “cannot be a credible partner” since he is unable to unite Syrians, defeat ISIL, or to win broad international support.”

Speaking after Hammond, the President of the Syrian National Coalition that fights both Assad’s regime and ISIL, Hadi Al-Bahra said that his delegation has received assurances of further support of the “Friends of Syria”.

Answering a question about the position of Syrian Kurds in Coalition, Al-Bahra noted that the vice=president of the coalition is Kurd himself.
He said that Syrian Kurds do not want separation, but instead support federal Syria, and would like to see “a federal system where they can elect their own government and have their own municipalities and so on.”

Earlier today, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution condemning violent extremism and calling on states to prevent the movement of terrorists or terrorist groups by effective border controls and controls on issuance of identity papers and travel documents.
