Storyline

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed that it should be the countries in the region to be the ones leading the military coalition to counter-terrorism in Iraq and Syria. He said that “if other nations wish to take action against terrorism, they must come to their support.”

Speaking before the General Assembly today (5 Sept) at the United Nations (UN), Rouhani said that if the countries leading the coalition, “do so to continue their hegemony in the region, they would make a strategic mistake.”

He noted that “since the pain is better known by the countries in the region, better they can form coalition, and accept to shoulder the responsibility of leadership to counter violence and terrorism.”

The Iranian leader pointed that “extremism is not a regional issue that just the nations of our region would have to grapple with; extremism is a global issue.”

He said that “certain states have helped creating it and are now failing to withstand it. Currently our peoples are paying the price.”

Rouhani noted the need to tackle the causes of terrorism if the world wants top eradicate it. He said that “terrorism germinates in poverty, unemployment, discrimination, humiliation and injustice. And it grows in the culture of violence.

He emphasized that “to uproot extremism, we must spread justice and development and disallow the distortion of divine teachings to justify brutality and cruelty.”

The Iranian President called on the “Western world” to align itself with the “true seekers of democracy” in the region and “soften the bitter memories of its support for dictators.

He said that “the experience of creation of Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and modern extremist groups have demonstrated that one cannot use extremist groups to counter an opposing state and remain impervious to the consequences of rising extremism.”

Turning to the nuclear program, Rouhani said that his government is committed to continue its enrichment activities for “peaceful” purposes “and to enjoy our full nuclear rights on Iranian soil within the framework of international law.”

As for negotiations with the five UN Security Council Permanent State Members and Germany (P5+1), he expressed the determination of his government to continue with the talks “in earnest and good faith.”

Rouhani noted the need to continue holding the negotiations “based on mutual respect and confidence, removal of concerns of both sides as well as equal footing and recognized international norms and principles.”
