8. SOUNDBITE (French) Alpha Conde, President, Republic of Guinea:
“There are urgent needs for our countries to further move forward our action to effectively fight combat Ebola. These are within various areas of strengthening infrastructure and health systems, a step up in a number of healthcare personnel, financial, material and logistic assistance, because the lack of such assistance is holding back our efforts. It is all very nice to make us promises, but there is an urgency to react. Faster we react, better chance we have to stop the disease.”

Speaking at the General Assembly, Guinea’s president Alpha Conde asked the international community to step up its assistance to the countries affected by Ebola. He said “it is all very nice to make us promises, but there is an urgency to react.”
In his speech today (25 Sept), President Conde recounted the negative impacts of the Ebola epidemic on his country’s economy, citing the slowdown of commercial exchange, diminished productivity and decline of activities in sectors of transport, investment and tourism.
At present, Guinea has lost 2.5 percent of its planned economic growth due to Ebola, and that loss could increase further according to its president, unless the Ebola epidemic is checked with “appropriate measures.”
He said “the other harmful consequences that are present in affected countries are notably closure of borders and free circulation of population, suspension of flights and stigmatization of the nationals of countries affected by the disease.”
Conde also said that the “Ebola epidemic is a reminder of the utmost necessity for a global approach to contain and defeat the disease.”
As of 25 September, Guinea has had 1022 cases of Ebola infection - 635 have died.
Listing urgent needs of his and those of other countries affected by Ebola, Conde asked the international community to act on its promises and deliver the assistance to effectively fight the epidemic.
