Storyline

The Secretary-General paid a visit to the World Health Organization and its Ebola Outbreak Response Operations team to express his appreciation for the work done since March in response to the outbreak in West Africa.

Speaking at a meeting in Geneva today (1 Oct), WHO Director-General Margarte Chan said “the United Nations has successfully mobilised the international community and many partners to do whatever it takes to support the countries in West Africa to address the Ebola crisis. Of course, the three hardest hit countries are Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.”

She outlined the unprecedented unanimous support by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council to set up UNMEER (UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response) as a mechanism to provide strong logistic support and health technical expertise.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said “I believe that if we are united, if we mobilise all our political will and resources as we have been doing we can contain and eliminate this virus from further spreading, not only treating the patients but also we can eliminate this one.”

He also said “General Assembly was unanimous, Security Council was unanimous, only for the second time in the history of the Security Council has taken this issue as the one which goes beyond health issues, it has gone to security, social and economic, affecting all spectrum of the people in the region and therefore it has become one of the big issues.”

Ban noted that during the General Assembly the three dominant issues were terrorism, climate change and the Ebola outbreak, adding that the international community has a huge responsibility to handle this matter.
