The United Nations Human Rights Office said there is an average of 10 people killed a day in eastern Ukraine despite a ceasefire agreement.
A monthly report on the human rights situation in Ukraine, covering the period between mid-April to 6th October, has decried continuing attacks on civilians using artillery, tank and small arms, in areas such as Donetsk.
However, the daily average of deaths in the ongoing conflict has been sourced beyond the duration of the report.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Gianni Magazzeni, the head of the America’s, Europe and Central Asia at the UN Human Rights Office, said “the day after the ceasefire counting from the 6th of September to 6th of October still 331 people were killed and 831 were wounded, which is an average of over slightly over 10 people per day."
Meanwhile, the report indicates that at least 3,600 people were killed and another 8,756 wounded in eastern Ukraine between April and October.
The UN Human Rights Office which has a presence in the country, has voiced concern over the protection of civilians, listing a wide range of human rights violations, including deprivation to earn an income.
Magazzeni also said “the armed groups still controlling areas in the east continue to terrorise the civilian population. We have mentioned multiple times that there is no rule of law, there is a total breakdown of law and order and no measure of redress effectively available.”
He also pointed out the there is continuing abduction, torture, disappearances, even executions on going, adding that “seizure of property, whether it is apartments, businesses or cars, with the threat or even mock execution, sexual harassment resulting for those who do not comply with the indications, requirements of these armed groups.”
