Storyline

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed to the international community to provide (USD)1 billion to respond to the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 4, 400 people have died from the deadly disease and there are now close to 9,000 people infected mainly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (16 Oct), Ban noted that the funds requested will enable the United Nations to get ahead of the curve and meet the target of reducing the rate of transmission by 1 December.

He also said “Ebola is a huge and urgent global problem that demands a huge and urgent global response.”

Ban stressed that the people and governments of West Africa are demonstrating significant resilience.

He added “but they have asked for our help. Dozens of countries are showing their solidarity. But we need to turn pledges into action. We need more doctors, nurses, equipment, treatment centres and medevac capacities.”

The World Health Organization warned of a continuously deteriorating situation in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, adding in that an increase in new cases in Guinea is being driven by a spike in cases in the capital, Conakry, and the nearby district of Coyah.

In Liberia, there is almost certainly significant under-reporting of cases from the capital Monrovia while in Sierra Leone, intense transmission is still occurring in the capital Freetown and its surroundings.

On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Secretary-General underlined that the two-state solution is the only way to end what he described as the senseless cycle of war.

He also said “the Gaza situation is a symptom of a larger problem: the stalemate in the Middle East Peace Process. People are understandably disillusioned with a decades-long effort that has failed to deliver a final deal. I know that trust has been eroded and unilateral actions look tempting.”

Finally, Ban pointed out that the tie and socks he was wearing were purple, the colour of choice for “Spirit day.”

He said “today my tie and socks are purple -- the colour of choice for “Spirit Day”, which is observed in the United States and many other countries as a day of solidarity with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, who face bullying and discrimination.”

Ban explained that through the UN’s Free & Equal campaign, the United Nations will continue to speak out against homophobia and speak up for the human rights of all LGBT people.
