“It is clear that there is a difference between a case arriving in a country and Ebola spreading in a country. Given the incubation period and I am sure you are all very familiar with the incubation period by now, 2 to 21 days, it is possible that a case will arrive in a country and what we are doing is getting countries that may see some of these imported cases, getting them prepared, getting them ready, and that the objective is to stop the transmission from occurring in these countries.

“We have been working with countries for many years to ensure that they can be better prepared to detect and to respond to any outbreak. Currently we are dealing with Ebola, most of these countries in the past had to deal with outbreaks, and the principals are the same. Be ready. Detect. Inform. Assess. Respond.”

“Health care workers are on the frontline, we `will never say that enough. They need to be protected. They need to be well trained. They need to identify a group of people who will have the huge responsibility to take care of the first patient and make sure that the patient is treated correctly and those taking care of him, her are also protected.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Isabelle Nuttall, Director, Global Capacities, Alert and Response, WHO:
“The first countries which are potentially at risk can be well prepared and then be able to provide support to all. We are already providing support to all the countries through the programme of building capacities which is independent of being Ebola or not Ebola, for any outbreak detection we are working with the countries and we help them be better.”

Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) will send its experts to Ivory Coast and Mali to test the Ebola-preparedness measures in these countries estimated to be at the greatest risk from Ebola outbreak spill-over.

The disease has already spread to areas that border Ivory Coast.

The WHO's health security response chief, Dr. Isabelle Nuttall, told reporters Thursday (16 Oct) that a team of ten people will leave for Mali on Sunday and another will leave for Ivory Coast within days.

Nuttall said Mali and Ivory Coast are on the top of the list of the 15 African countries that need to prepare for possible Ebola outbreak.

She said the WHO “have been working with countries for many years to ensure that they can be better prepared to detect and to respond to any outbreak.”

According to agency statistics, there have been 9,000 recorded cases in West Africa with almost 4,500 people who have died from disease.

The WHO expects 5,000-10,000 new cases a week by December.

Nuttall said the key to stopping the global spread of Ebola lies in controlling its spread in the three West African nations hardest-hit by the disease.
