Storyline

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Bangura travelled to Bentiu, South Sudan where she met government officials and displaced women living in shelters at the United Nations compound.

During her visit she met with and government officials and women group. In a meeting the women shared their experiences with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and talked the challenges and the sexual violence they go through.

SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH) Zainab Bangura, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.
“In all my life and experience of nearly thirty years in public service and in the UN and as a government minister I have never seen what I saw today.”

It is unfortunate what is happening in South Sudan, said Mrs. Bangura adding that South Sudan has the opportunity to be the best country in Africa. There are 53 countries ahead of South Sudan these countries have gone through war, they made mistakes and I think South Sudan has the best opportunity to learn from these countries and share their experiences, she added.

The women called for peace in South Sudan and asked the government to sign the binding peace agreement.

Bentiu has seen some of the heaviest fighting in South Sudan since the crisis broke out in mid-December 2013.

There are over forty two thousands displaced persons living in the Protection of civilian’s area at the UN compound in Bentiu.
