Storyline

The Head of the United Nations Mission for Emergency Ebola Response (UNMEER). Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmedtravelled , today (12 Jan) to Guinea where he met with President Alpha Condé.

Continuing his first tour of the region, Ould Cheikh Ahmed, together with Special Envoy on Ebola David Nabarro and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director General Bruce Ayward, discussed the current state of the response.

After their meeting, Ahmed and Condé spoke to the press.

The Special Representative pointed out the damage that the Ebola crisis has inflicted on the Guinean economy.

He said “this crisis had caused a lot of damage to the economy. It is a country that was experiencing robust growth but has suffered. It is the intention of everyone to do everything so that the crisis ends as soon as possible.”

Ahmed stressed the importance of the government taking the lead in the response and of working at the community level to find and treat every case.

President Condé recognized that there is still a problem of community resistance.

He said “everyone must mobilize so that we don’t hide the sick and have access to everyone, and that all cases are reported. Because we cannot cure Ebola if we sill have a problem of resistance.”

Condé stressed that only with through community cooperation Ebola can be defeated.

Guinea has launched a campaign to end Ebola within 60 days.

According to the WHO, as off 7 January, there have been 2,775 confirmed people infected by the Ebola virus in Guinea since the beginning of the outbreak. 1,781 people have died.
