Storyline

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour said on Wednesday (21 Oct) he hoped a visit of the Secretary-General to Jerusalem will help ease tensions between Israel and Palestine after weeks of violence, during which over 40 people were killed and dozens injured.

Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian President Abbas, as well as with Israeli and Palestinian victims of the recent hostilities and terror attacks which have taken place in more than 50 locations, including in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, Hebron and Bethlehem.

Addressing reporters at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Mansour said he hoped that the Secretary-General, the UN and the Security Council, “will succeed in putting an immediate end to this onslaught against our people, this aggression and to remove all the military formation whether they are official, army, policy, security or armed settlers, vigilantes and other armed Jewish militias away from the Palestinian civilian populations in order to deescalate the situation.”

The Ambassador appealed for the Security Council to “shoulder its responsibility” because the “situation that we are witnessing in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in occupied East Jerusalem, is threating international peace and security.”

Mansour also said the international community and Security Council were in a “position to deal with the issue of providing us with protection until the end occupation.”
