“This crisis would not have erupted if the Palestinian people had a perspective of hope towards a viable Palestinian state, if they had an economy that provides jobs and opportunities, if they had more control over their security and the legal and administrative processes, that define their daily existence, in short, if the Palestinians did not still live under a stifling and humiliating occupation that has lasted almost half a century.”

“No progress can be made towards peace on the base of the two-state solution while Israel illegally and effectively changes the demographic facts on the ground in occupied Palestinian land including Eastern Jerusalem through entrenching occupation. We urge the Security Council once again to respond to the current crisis in order to save innocent lives to save the possibility of a just and durable peace.”

“This is not a cycle of violence these are simply unprovoked attacks against Israelis for no reason, rather than the fact that they are Jews living in their historic homeland. Like any country Israel has the right and obligation to defend its citizens and this is exactly what we are doing.”

“Stop making excuses for the Palestinians and start holding them accountable. Demand that Abbas ceases the incitement, insist that he returns to the negotiation table only then, once the Palestinians will see that promoting violence will get them nowhere, will the reality on the ground change and the prospect of peace return.”

The United Nations Security Council held today (22 Oct) a ministerial-level debate on the Middle East, as unrest and violence in Israel and Palestine continue.
More than 60 people were killed and thousands injured, after a series of deadly clashes between Palestinians and Israelis - including Israeli security forces - marked much of October. Incidents were reported in more than 50 different locations, including in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jenin, Tulkarm and Nablus.
Opening the debate, the UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said the crisis would not have erupted if the Palestinians “did not still live under a stifling and humiliating occupation that has lasted almost half a century.”
The Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Observer State of Palestine, Riyad al-Maliki, urged the Security Council to compel Israel to cease its violations. “This is a fundamental demand for progress in the peace process aimed at resolving fundamental issues and realising a just and durable solution based on international legitimacy,” al-Maliki said.
He also warned that efforts to establish a two-state solution could not go ahead “while Israel illegally and effectively changes the demographic facts on the ground….through entrenching occupation.”
Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said the attacks against Israelis were “unprovoked” and added that like any other country Israel had “the right and obligation to defend its citizens and this is exactly what we are doing.”
Danon also criticised the international community for taking sides with the Palestinians. The Israeli Ambassador said “stop making excuses for the Palestinians and start holding them accountable. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is on a tour of Israel, Palestine and Jordan, aimed at easing tensions in the region.
