“We warned once again of the dangerous and irresponsible Israeli provocations in Jerusalem, especially those targeting the Al Aqsa Mosque compound. “Democracy cannot co-exist with occupation. The moment that Israel has opted for occupation, and opted for occupying another people’s lives, land and future, then you know Israel doesn’t deserve to be called a democracy.”

The Israeli Ambassador to the UN urged today (22 Oct) the Palestinian President to meet with his government, after weeks of violence between Israeli and Palestinians, saying it "is the only way to promote peace in the region".
Danny Danon made the comments after a Security Council ministerial-level debate on the Middle East, during which the Deputy Secretary-General said the eruption of violence gripping the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as Israel and Gaza, showed no signs of abating.
“These are fragile days. If the international community really wants to help, it should urge President Mahmoud Abbas to accept Prime Minister’s (Benjamin Netanyahu) repeated calls to meet with him. This is the only way to promote peace in the region,” Danon said.
The Ambassador reiterated Israel’s position saying that it “was and is committed to preserving the status quo. and will not agree to an international presence on Temple Mount.”
Danon also noted that “what we are doing today in Israel, we are deploying forces, we are taking security measures, but for the long run we have to fight with the core of the evil which is incitement.”
Meanwhile, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Observer State of Palestine, Riyad al-Maliki, accused the government of Israel of stirring up tensions, saying they threatened “to turn the conflict from a national one to a religious one.”
Maliki said the source of the escalations of the past few months was Israel’s continued “military occupation and the denial of the Palestinian people of their right to freedom and independence.”
When asked whether he still believed Israel was a democracy, Maliki said “democracy cannot co-exist with occupation. The moment that Israel has opted for occupation, and opted for occupying another people’s lives, land and future, then you know Israel doesn’t deserve to be called a democracy.”
