Storyline

The UN General Assembly today (04 Dec) adopted a Resolution establishing November 5th as World Tsunami Day.

The Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations Ambassador Motohide Yoshikawa said even though Tsunamis are “relatively rare phenomenon among natural disasters they can cause tremendous damage both in terms of the loss of human lives and the destruction of property. Much of this damage can be avoided if the community is aware of the risks in advance.”

He stressed, “Japan is determined to take the initiative in helping improve preparedness in the event of a Tsunami by such actions as holding events not only at the UN level but also at the national level.”

In October 2015, Japan introduced a draft resolution to a United Nations General Assembly to designate November 5 as World Tsunami Day to raise awareness of the threats posed by seismic sea waves around the world.

In Japan, November 5th is marked as the Tsunami and Disaster preparedness day.

Parts of eastern Japan were devastated by a tsunami after a magnitude-9 earthquake struck offshore on March 11, 2011.
