Storyline

The President of the United Nations General Assembly Morgens Lykketoft said, “discrimination against LGBT people leads to exclusion, to waste of human potential, to loss of creative talent, and loss of productive capacity.

Speaking today (10 Dec) in New York at an interactive discussion on the economic costs and benefits of inclusion of LGBT individuals from the business, State and civil society perspectives, Lykketoft said “discrimination against women, or racial minorities, or migrants or other disadvantaged groups” and LGBT people ultimately, “undermines our 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals elaborated therein."

Charles Radcliffe, United Nations Human Rights Office’s Chief of Global Issues said, “The message of today’s event is this: discrimination hurts people, it hurts companies, it hurts entire countries. And those most directly effected are of course the victims, individuals who are being discriminated against.”

Radcliffe stressed “The economic damage caused by discrimination is substantial and entirely unnecessary. With different laws and policies and importantly different mindset, we would have a different result.”

Today also marks Human Rights Day. It is observed every year on 10 December and commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
