The head of the UN peacekeeping operations told the Security Council “despite the many challenges and repeated attempts by spoilers to derail the process, the Central African Republic (CAR) is moving ahead in ending its transition in line with the revised electoral calendar.”
Speaking today (14 Dec) during a Council’s meeting on the situation in the Central African Republic, Hervé Ladsous noted that with Sunday’s Constitutional referendum CAR has entered the final and most sensitive phase of the electoral process with the first round of presidential and legislative elections to take place on 27 December.
There are 30 presidential candidates, including one woman.
He pointed out that yesterday’s referendum was held successfully in the majority of the country, however, he added “efforts to undermine the process by elements of the anti-Balaka and members of the ex-Seleka Front Populaire pour la Renaissance de la Centrafrique of Nourredine Adam were reported in parts of Bangui, and in the regions.”
Nearly two million voters, representing 95 per cent of the estimated electorate, have been registered for the poll, a situation which the UN has described as "unprecedented."
Ladsous also welcomed the signing of the electoral code of conduct by presidential candidates on 9 December and he appealed to all candidates to campaign peacefully.
Commenting on the attempts to undermine Sunday’s referendum, he said “the entire international community must remain united in its uncompromising message rejecting any attempt to derail the political process from any quarter and to demonstrate that there will be consequences for those that seek to undermine the political process.”
Regarding the future, the head of the UN peacekeeping operations underlined “in order to truly address the root causes of the crisis, we will need to support the new Government in working in a spirit of unity, inclusivity and reconciliation.”
