South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir urged newly appointed governors to support a peace agreement between his government and the opposition, signed in late August.
Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday (29 Dec), the President also said that there will be zero tolerance to corruption saying “corruption is still a cancer to us in our country so it is something that you people will have to still continue to fight.”
On 24 December, President Kiir issued a decree dissolving the previous ten states that form South Sudan and created new 28 states, in a move that has been criticized by the opposition.
Addressing the newly appointed governors the President said that those States were designated for the opposition as per the peace agreement. He urged the governors in those States to cooperate and stepdown when time comes.
President Kiir reiterated the government commitments to implement the agreement and directed the governors to receive and protect members of the opposition in their respective states.
Earlier opposition spokesperson, James Gadet told the United Nation’s Radio Miraya, that operationalization of the States would negatively impact the implementation of the agreement.
Traditional dancers were at hand celebrating occasion, in which foreign dignitaries were notably absent.
