3. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“Good morning everyone. The underground nuclear test announced by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 6 January is deeply troubling. This test once again violates numerous Security Council resolutions despite the united call by the international community to cease such activities. It is also a grave contravention of the international norm against nuclear testing. This act is profoundly destabilising for regional security and seriously undermines international non-proliferation efforts. I condemn it unequivocally. I demand the DPRK cease any further nuclear activities and meet its obligations for verifiable denuclearization. We are monitoring and assessing developments in close coordination with the concerned international organisations – including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization – and interested parties.”

The United Nations Secretary-General condemned today (6 Jan) the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s alleged hydrogen bomb test and called on the country to cease all further nuclear activities and to meet its obligations for verifiable denuclearization.
Addressing reporters at the United Nations headquarters, Ban Ki-moon said the test, announced by DPRK on Wednesday was “deeply troubling” and in violation of “numerous Security Council resolutions despite the united call by the international community to cease such activities.”
The Secretary-General said DPRK’s test “was also a grave contravention of the international norm against nuclear testing. This act is profoundly destabilising for regional security and seriously undermines international non-proliferation efforts. I condemn it unequivocally.”
He also called on DPRK to “cease any further nuclear activities and meet its obligations for verifiable denuclearization. We are monitoring and assessing developments in close coordination with the concerned international organisations – including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization – and interested parties.”
Following the DPRK’s announcement, the head of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that if the nuclear test is confirmed, it is in clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions and is “deeply regrettable.”
