The director of the data centre at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna, confirmed today (6 Jan) an unusual seismic event was picked up by monitoring stations, near DPRK’s declared nuclear test site.
During a press briefing at the organisation’s headquarters, Randy Bell told reporters “the international monitoring system did exactly what it was supposed to do this morning. Signals were detected on numerous seismic stations and these signals were immediately made available to all our member states.”
Bell said the seismic event had occurred in the vicinity of the declared North Korean nuclear test site, and that the signals detected were “very similar to the characteristics of the seismic signals detected from the previous signals detected from the previous declared nuclear tests.”
He also noted the organisations had already reported in 2013 “a seismic magnitude of 4.9, this time our initial results indicate a seismic magnitude of 4.9, a seismic body wave magnitude of 4.9.”
