“No matter what test it is, our intention is to put an end through the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty which is now urgency with the current geo-political situation and what is happening if it’s confirmed another nuclear test explosion by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). If so let’s take it that this is a last wake up call to the international community to start finding ways to build the trust that it is necessary to secure the remaining ratification and to move forward the entry into force of the CTBT.”

Storyline

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization confirmed today (7 Jan) the seismic event detected yesterday by its monitoring stations near the declared DPRK’s nuclear test site was a manmade explosion.

“So this is what we can say, at least now we have a definite answer that we are not dealing with a natural event, we are dealing with indeed a manmade explosion,” CTBTO’s Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo told reporters from the organisation’s headquarters in Vienna.

The initial automatic detection of the event was made on 6 January 2016 at 01:36 UTC by 27 primary seismic stations. The initial estimate of the event's magnitude was 4.9, which was revised to 4.85 in the course of further analysis.

The preliminary analysis showed that the event occurred in the vicinity of the nuclear test site of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The characteristics of the waveforms were similar to the event detected on 12 February 2013, when the DPRK last declared to have conducted a nuclear test.

The organisation issued a Revised Event Bulletin (REB) on Thursday, which identified the event as a man-made explosion. The explosion can only be classified as nuclear once corresponding airborne radioactivity is detected.

Under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty the determination of an event's nature - nuclear explosion or not - lies with the Member States and their National Data Centres.

If so let’s take it that this is a last wake up call to the international community to start finding ways to build the trust that it is necessary to secure the remaining ratification and to move forward the entry into force of the CTBT,” Zerbo added.
