“My hope and dream is that these fall into hands of people around the world who may be having a hard time with their own sexuality with their own governments, their churches, their families that tell them that they are less than or not equal to. And for this series as they see them to know that the United Nations, the good guys, the developed world is saying you are equal to, you are not less than, you deserve respect and happiness and love.”

“Well, the UN produces stamps on all sorts of themes every year. And I think we had stamps on racism and people with disabilities, stamps trying to raise awareness about abuse of children. This goes right to the heart of the UN charter.”

“We wish to remind the UN to limit itself strictly to activities mandated by member states and especially to promote issues that are beneficial to mankind, rather than lend itself as tool to promote a deranged behaviour under a guise of promoting human rights.”

A commemorative United Nations “UN Free & Equal” postage stamps were unveiled today (4 Feb) at the UN headquarters in New York aimed at promoting LGBT ( lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality) around the world.
The set of six stamps by artist Sergio Baradat celebrates the diversity of the LGBT community and marks the first time that the UN has issued stamps with this theme.
UN human rights representative Charles Radcliffe said that “fighting homophobia and transphobia, fighting discrimination, fighting for equal rights” is essentially a core UN value.
He said “this goes right to the heart of the UN charter.”
The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus performed at the ceremony.
At a UN meeting on social development Monday, the Nigerian deputy ambassador said that the majority of member states were against issuing the LGBT rights stamp - and they had not been asked. He appealed to the chair person to stop the unveiling of the stamp and its release.
Ambassador Sarki said “we wish to remind the UN to limit itself strictly to activities mandated by member states and especially to promote issues that are beneficial to mankind, rather than lend itself as tool to promote a deranged behaviour under a guise of promoting human rights.”
“UN Free & Equal”, a global United Nations campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality launched and led by OHCHR, recently celebrated two years of campaigning, in which the campaign's message of acceptance and equality reached some two billion people.
