3. SOUNDBITE (English) Gerard van Bohemen, New Zealand’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations:
“It is sad that it is a case, but the Russian war air strikes have been a direct cause of this crisis around Aleppo. The particular point we draw attention to today, was the fact that two of the crossings into Turkey have been compromised as a result of those air strikes and we are very concerned about that situation. Stephen O’Brien said one of them have been reopened, the one that has been closed briefly, but for how long we don’t know, so clearly that is the situation that is of great concern.”

“We ask that serious considerations been given to humanitarian pause to enable assistance to go through, because it is clear that the aid is also not going through to Madaya and other besieged areas that need more aid and we also asked for more information about reports of cluster munition but we haven’t head back from.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations:
“We are not about to be apologetic about what we are doing. We are acting in a very transparent manner, daily briefing are being conducted by our Ministry of Defence. We are present there legally, at invitation of the Syrian government and in contrast to what a so-called US led coalition is doing in Syria where they are acting outside of the international law and incidentally never telling anybody what exactly they are doing in Syria or in Iraq. What their targets are, what results of their campaigns are and also refusing our cooperation to fight terrorists on the ground.”
