“He’s coming here to push forward the peace process that has been signed – the IGAD Peace process, and the President assured him of his commitment to implement this agreement. The Secretary General also assured His Excellency the President that he will urge Riek Machar to come as soon as possible so that the Transitional Government of National Unity can be formed. And I think that is important. They also touched on the humanitarian issues which the President assured the Secretary General that all the humanitarian agencies will be given free humanitarian access in all the areas of South Sudan.”

Storyline

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who arrived in South Sudan’s capital Juba, for a day’s visit met with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir.

After a closed-door meeting which lasted about an hour, South Sudanese Foreign Affairs Minsister Marial Benjamin told reporters there were various issues discussed.

He said that the Secretary-General assured the president that he will urge Riek Machar to come as soon as possible so that the Transitional Government of National Unity can be formed
and that the president assured the Secretary-General that all the humanitarian agencies would be given free humanitarian access in all the areas of South Sudan

Ban Ki-Moon will meet with the protection of civilians’ site representatives and also with the NGOs in charge of managing the site.

Travelling with the Secretary-General are Hervé Ladsous is the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations; Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Kang Kyung-Wha; and the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Ivan Šimonović.
