Storyline

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Yukiya Amano said his team found “no indication of the diversion of declared nuclear material from peaceful nuclear activities in Iran.”

Speaking to the IAEA Board of Directors, Amano said Iran’s Additional Protocol, a legally binding document which grants the Agency expanded access to nuclear sites, “has been provisionally implemented since January 16th, 2016.”

The Director-General added that under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran has to implement its commitments “for many years to come, and the Agency has to verify, monitor and report on its implementation.” In this regard, Amano said he had established a new office to verify the safeguards of the Iranian nuclear programme at the beginning of the month.

The JCPOA was reached between Iran and the P5+1, which includes the 5 Permanent Members of the Security Council (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States) and Germany.

Turning to Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Amano said that country’s nuclear programme remained “a major cause of concern.” He said the alleged nuclear weapon test claimed by the DPRK “represents a clear violation of Security Council resolutions and is deeply regrettable.”

Amano said the IAEA stands ready to “contribute to the peaceful resolution of the DPRK nuclear issue by resuming its verification activities once a political agreement is reached among countries concerned.”

The Director-General also reported on the Agency’s response to an outbreak of the Zika virus in Latin America and the Caribbean. He said the IAEA’s activities are “being planned, and carried out, in close coordination with the broader efforts of the international community, led by the World Health Organization and the Pan-American Health Organization.”

The Board of Governors, which meets five times a year at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, is one of the IAEA's main policymaking bodies.
