Storyline

The United Nations is increasing its support to thousands of displaced people from Mozambique currently settled in Karise, Mwanza district.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has provided non-food items and deployed extra capacity to manage the inflow of asylum seekers and handle registration, while UNICEF has delivered supplies to the camp including medical treatment supplies, tents and school supplies for temporary classrooms.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has sent some 240 metric tons of diverse food commodities including fortified blended foods to prevent malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies amongst the population, and children under age two in particular.

UN Resident Coordinator, Mia Seppo, said the camps are “very congested” and available land is scarce. She said “to really improve these conditions, with this number of people, then relocation is the better option.”

The Karise site is 120 kms from Blantyre, close to the Mozambican border. Following rumoured military activity and skirmishes in neighbouring Tete province, residents have been flowing over the border into Malawi, relaying tales of aggression and destruction of property and possessions. UNHCR has expressed concern on the growing number of arrivals at the Karise site, which is leading to overcrowding.
