“The prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) in The Hague, Serge Brammertz, announced his decision to appeal the trial judgement against the Serbian politician Vojislav Šešelj. Mr. Šešelj was acquitted by the International Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) of all charges, including crimes against humanity on 31 March. Mr. Brammertz said in a statement that for the victims of the crimes, the forthcoming appeal is of the utmost priority.”

SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Vojislav Šešelj, Serbian politician Vojislav Šešelj:
“I have been prosecuted at least 50 times in my country, Serbia, but never have I been so terribly insulted by a prosecutor.”
The prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) in The Hague, Serge Brammertz, announced his decision today (6 Apr) to appeal the trial judgement against the Serbian politician Vojislav Šešelj.
Šešelj had been acquitted by the International Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) of all charges, including crimes against humanity on 31 March.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, said Brammertz had indicated that “for the victims of the crimes, the forthcoming appeal is of the utmost priority.”
Šešelj, 61, is the president of the Serbian Radical Party and a member of the Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.
He was not in the courtroom at the time of the verdict. He is currently being treated for cancer and he had been allowed to return to Serbia because of his deteriorating health.
Šešelj faced nine counts of which three crimes against humanity (persecution, deportation and inhumane act of forcible transfer) and six war crimes (murder, torture and cruel treatment, wanton destruction, destruction or wilful damage done to institutions dedicated to religion or education, plunder of public or private property).
He was accused of having directly committed, incited, aided and abetted those crimes committed by Serbian forces during the period from August 1991 until September 1993, or to have been part of their commission through his participation in a joint criminal enterprise (JCE).
