3. SOUNDBITE (English) Jane Holl Lute, Special Coordinator on Improving the UN Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse:
“The meetings here in Bambari were for us to get a first-hand feel, as we assume the responsibilities of the office of the Special Coordinator on behalf of the Secretary-General, of the challenges that we face in the field in preventing and responding rapidly to allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse. I’ve been to the field many times in the past; each visit is unique, each conversation is unique, and each encounter with the local population, with the UN staff, with the military forces and police that work here brings a deeper understanding of their commitment to the success of this mission, but also a deeper understanding of challenges they face.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Jane Holl Lute, Special Coordinator on Improving the UN Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse:
“My address to the soldiers was specific and connecting to the special role that soldiers play in MINUSCA and the special commitment to values and principles that soldiers have, which is to put those principles in play every day and look after each other; look after each other’s health, look after each other’s welfare, look after each other’s behavior, and look after each other’s performance. This unit comes with an excellent reputation; they have been performing in an outstanding fashion.”

Continuing her visit to the Central African Republic (CAR), the special coordinator on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) met with troops in Bambari today (11 Apr.)
Jane Holl Lute, who is in the CAR to discuss stronger measures to respond to the scourge, said she wanted to get a “first-hand feel” of the challenges faced in the field “in preventing and responding rapidly to allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse.”
After meeting with the Mauritanian contingent, she said soldiers “look after each other’s health, look after each other’s welfare” and must also “look after each other’s behavior, and look after each other’s performance.”
The UN mission in the CAR (MINUSCA) announced on 25 March that it had received new allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Lute in February to coordinate efforts to curb sexual exploitation and abuse among UN peacekeepers.
