5. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Gherman, Moldova’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“The nature of conflict has changed, and the emergence of new actors, and the scourge of terrorism, represent serious threats to our common security. No nation alone is capable to respond and to defend itself. We do it only with a global engagement and by means over coordinated response, and the prevention must stay at the core of all our activities.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Gherman, Moldova’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“We also have to ensure that we successfully implement the zero tolerance policy towards the sexual abuse. This is unacceptable. It should never be tolerated. And the response should come from the organization and from the member states, because this tarnishes, and this completely undermines our joint effort and the reputation of all of us the member states and of the United Nations.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Gherman, Moldova’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“First and foremost, integrity and accountability has to be manifested by the Secretary-General herself, or himself, and by all the members of the Secretariat. And we should never forget that the Secretary-General has also an important role to play in ensuring connectivity and unity, which is very important word in the activity of the Security Council, the General Assembly, and all other bodies. And a good Secretary-General should be the facilitator of that unity and enabling all the bodies, including the Security Council and the General Assembly, to act in delivering on the joint purposes.”

Storyline

A candidate for the post of the United Nations Secretary-General, the Minister of Foreign and European Integration of Moldova, Natalia Gherman, today (13 Apr) said the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Climate Change Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, “offer us a clear path to fulfil our commitments and our aspirations.”

Gherman said “now is the time to turn to implementation with the objective of leaving no one behind. And this is the commitment that will guide my efforts and inform my decisions as Secretary-General, provided I am elected.”

Over the course of three days, the official candidates – currently nine of them – are answering questions related to promoting sustainable development, how to improve efforts to create peace, how to protect human rights, how to deal with huge humanitarian catastrophes, and how to resolve challenges defined by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Gherman said “the nature of conflict has changed, and the emergence of new actors, and the scourge of terrorism, represent serious threats to our common security.”

No nation alone, she said, “is capable to respond and to defend itself” calling for “global engagement” and “coordinated response.”

Gherman also addressed the issue of sexual abuse by UN personnel. She said “we have to ensure that we successfully implement the zero tolerance policy towards the sexual abuse” and “the response should come from the organization and from the member states, because this tarnishes, and this completely undermines our joint effort and the reputation of all of us the member states and of the United Nations.”

After the meeting, asked about her vision for the post of Secretary-General, she said “first and foremost, integrity and accountability has to be manifested by the Secretary-General herself, or himself, and by all the members of the Secretariat.

As part of the informal dialogues, each candidate has a televised and webcast two-hour timeslot, starting with a short oral presentation. Representatives from Member States will then ask questions, followed by the President of the General Assembly, who will ask a few of the more than 1,000 questions submitted by the general public on social media under the hashtag #UNSGcandidates.
