4. SOUNDBITE (English) Vuk Jeremić, Serbia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“As Secretary-General I would seek to place sustainable development and control of climate change at the centre of the organization’s endeavours, and intend to direct the entire UN system to prioritize work on this crucial issue. The 9th Secretary-General would also take up the post at a time of pervasive global instability. I believe it is possible to meet the emerging challenges that emanate from that; but only if there is an overhaul of how the UN conducts preventive diplomacy and peace operations.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Vuk Jeremić, Serbia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“As Secretary-General I would fervently champion human rights as a system-wide UN core. An important element in improving human rights upfront, in my opinion, is providing more resources to the Office of the UN Commissioner for Human Rights. I believe that we also must increase attention to not only to political and civil rights, but social, economic, and cultural ones, education in particular.”
7. Med shot, Sierra Leone delegate
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Vuk Jeremić, Serbia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“The 1995 Beijing declaration established the goal of fifty-fifty gender parity in the UN system, yet more than two decades later that goal is far from being achieved. Today less than a third of senior UN positions are held by women. As Secretary-General I would therefore appoint qualified women to 50 percent of UN Under-Secretary-General or equivalent positions from day one.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Vuk Jeremić, Serbia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“I intend to lead the most transparent UN administration in history. That is my hope. I will have to work hard with member states and with people who are already in the organizations, some of which are exceptional individuals of the highest possible integrity whom I deeply respect, but this is going to be one of my tasks.”

Storyline

A candidate for the post of the United Nations Secretary-General, the former President of the General Assembly and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Vuk Jeremić, today (14 Apr) said that if elected, he would “seek to place sustainable development and control of climate change at the centre of the organization’s endeavours.”

Jeremić said the 9th Secretary-General would “take up the post at a time of pervasive global instability,” adding that “it is possible to meet the emerging challenges that emanate from that; but only if there is an overhaul of how the UN conducts preventive diplomacy and peace operations.”

Over the course of three days, the official candidates – currently nine of them – are answering questions related to promoting sustainable development, how to improve efforts to create peace, how to protect human rights, how to deal with huge humanitarian catastrophes, and how to resolve challenges defined by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Jeremić said that as Secretary-General he would “fervently champion human rights as a system-wide UN core” as well as “increase attention to not only to political and civil rights, but social, economic, and cultural ones, education in particular.”

On gender equality at the organization, he said “the 1995 Beijing declaration established the goal of fifty-fifty gender parity in the UN system, yet more than two decades later that goal is far from being achieved.” As Secretary-General, he vowed to appoint “qualified women to 50 percent of UN Under-Secretary-General or equivalent positions from day one.”

After the meeting, the Serbian diplomat said he intends to “lead the most transparent UN administration in history.”

As part of the informal dialogues, each candidate has a televised and webcast two-hour timeslot, starting with a short oral presentation. Representatives from Member States will then ask questions, followed by the President of the General Assembly, who will ask a few of the more than 1,000 questions submitted by the general public on social media under the hashtag #UNSGcandidates.
