“I want to thank those who supported us in this process like TROIKA because without their support and without the advance team coming to Juba this day may not have been possible. I also want to thank the government also showing the good will to receive the advance team and to work with the advance team up to today; they have done substantial work and I hope with my arrival and the rest of the leadership we will push the other obstacles and get rid of them and move forward to full implementation of the agreement.”

SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar landed in Juba on a UN flight from Gambela Ethiopia today (26 Apr.) Machar's arrival marks a return to the city where the civil war began in December 2013, initially as a fight between Dinka and Nuer presidential guards in a barracks in Juba.
Upon arrival, Machar was seen wearing an African patterned shirt and was accompanied by his wife and officials of his party. He was welcomed by high ranking government officials, officials from SPLM-IO group, diplomats and UN officials.
Talking to journalists Machar thanked TROIKA and others for their support and expressed hope that implementation of the peace agreement will now move forward.

Machar also added that his priority in the new Transitional Government of National Unity will be stabilization of security, stabilization of the economy getting access of the humanitarian relief, and then the process of national reconciliation.

Machar left the airport and drove straight to the Presidential Palace where President Salva Kiir, his main rival and peace partner, was waiting for him. He immediately took oath of office as First Vice President of the world’s youngest nation before President Kiir. This is expected to be followed by formation of transitional government of national unity in the next few days.
