Storyline

The United Nations (UN) Security Council expressed its outrage at all recent attacks on civilians and medical facilities in Syria and “stressed that these actions may amount to war crimes.”

In a press statement read by Security Council President Amr Aboulatta today (12 MAY), the members of the Council condemned increased terrorist attacks carried out by ISIL, the Al-Nusra Front and other associates of Al-Qaida. They however affirmed that UN Member States must ensure that any measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under “international human rights, international refugee and international humanitarian law.”

Asked by a reporter who said he was from Aleppo city on what could be done to stop the bloodshed, the Egyptian ambassador said the situation in Syria was complicated and “lots of hands are playing in this country”. He added, “we have to really stand firm against any breach of this cessation of hostilities.”

New Zealand ambassador Gerard van Bohemen said not enough information was available to determine whether the recent attacks were in fact war crimes. He said, “There are individual positions on these issues needing to be investigated, but there has been no discussion about setting up an international mechanism.”

Recent attacks in Aleppo city were reported on medical facilities and other civilian targets. Over 30 civilians were also killed in a reported air strike on a refugee camp in Idlib province
