14. SOUNDBITE (English) Roberto Azevêdo, WTO Director-General:
"After two successful ministerial conferences, I think there has been a resurgence of interest on the WTO on the part of the private sector. This is growing engagement, and that is very welcome. Trade negotiations do not occur in a vacuum, so it is important for WTO members to hear directly from business about the challenges that they face in the real economy, as well as from consumers, and workers, and other voices in civil society."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Sunil Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises:
"We discussed a lot of issues under the umbrella of the WTO. Having e-commerce at the centre stage of the new world order, ensuring that nations can trade with each other, digital signatures are accepted, payment mechanisms are in place, and we don't have any discriminatory or protectionist regime from one country to the other."

"A lot of times the tariff barriers don't always affect everyone, and they are in certain sectors. And it's to continue to identify those sectors that are affected by the tariff barriers, and start addressing, on that. But the majority are affected by the non-tariff barriers. The issues of transparency, the issues of red tape, the issues of regulation uncertainty, and again going back to the SMEs [Small and Medium-sized Enterprises], this is where we think that SMES are highly affected."

Business leaders met at the World Trade Organization (WHO) yesterday in Geneva to outline how the organization could address the current needs of the business community. They also urged the WTO to look at issues such as electronic commerce, rules to better facilitate services and investment flows as well as support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
The Trade Dialogues event brought together over 60 business leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities they face in conducting trade operations and to discuss how the WTO can help in dealing with them. The attendees were from small and large enterprises, from developed and developing countries, and from a variety of sectors. The event was held at the request of the International Chamber of Commerce and the B20 group of leading independent business associations from G20 economies, and facilitated by the WTO.
This high-level event for the business community is the first of its kind to be held at the WTO. It is part of a series of 'Trade dialogues' that will provide a range of stakeholders with the possibility to discuss their concerns on trade-related matters.
Participants were welcomed by WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo. At the final session, the discussion leaders and other participants shared the outcome of their deliberations with the WTO membership through a dialogue with ambassadors and permanent representatives.
