“This is a very worrying number of children. We see that the statistics are growing for unaccompanied (children) which is a new trend as well. When all eyes have been focused on Greece, this has unfolded in a somewhat silent tragedy in the central Mediterranean.”

“Our message really with this report is that whatever drives children, no matter where they come from, they are entitled to protection and they are still children. Every country, those they leave, those they cross, and those in which they settle, has a duty to protect these children. And this is often forgotten. So of course this message is very clearly to the sub-Saharan African governments where they come from as well. These children need to be monitored, they need to be protected, and they need to be cared for at every step of the way.”

UNICEF spokesperson Sarah Crowe told reporters today (14 Jun) in Geneva that while the focus was on the influx of refugees and migrants in the eastern Mediterranean and Greece, a “silent tragedy” was unfolding in the central Mediterranean and Italy.
Crowe was speaking to reporters about UNICEF’s new report which focused on migrant and refugee children making the harrowing journey to Europe. She said nine out of ten children arriving through Italy were unaccompanied making them vulnerable to various forms of exploitation and abuse.
She said the central Mediterranean route between North Africa and Italy has become more important since the closure of the Balkan borders and the EU-Turkey agreement. UNICEF said the route has become the deadliest claiming 2,427 lives in the first 6 months of this year compared to 1,786 last year.
Crowe said the report documented a variety of testimonies on the dangers children faced during and the reasons why they decided to make the perilous journey. She said the message UNICEF wanted to get across in this report was “whatever drives children, no matter where they come from, they are entitled to protection and they are still children.” She said every country from departure to arrival had “a duty to protect these children and this is often forgotten.”
