Today, we stand united – British, Americans, and people around the world – to affirm that the hate and violence that took her from us are ultimately no match for the love and compassion that she spread in her life.”

United Naitons (UN) officials, diplomats and friends paid tribute today (22 June) to the memory and legacy of Jo Cox, the British member of parliament that was murdered last week in her home town.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien, overcome with emotion, said “let Jo be the shining light that lives on across the world, throughout the United Nations and beyond, as inspiration to us all. To serve better every day, the people Jo used to serve.”
US Ambassador Samantha Power, reading a message from President Barack Obama, said “countless women, children, and refugees around the world live with more dignity and hope because they knew Jo Cox and were touched by her work on their behalf.”
She said “the hate and violence that took her from us, are ultimately no match for the love and compassion that she spread in her life.”
Former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the UK, David Miliband, said “Jo Cox had no time for the idea that humanitarian action could be divorced from politics, they were two sides of the same coin, different ways to build a better world, based on justice, equality, and respect.”
Muna Abbas, a politician and activist from Cox’s hometown in West Yorkshire, said “we have lost some of our light, the legacy of Jo and the memory of Jo will continue to burn bright and live on all of those who will continue her work, with the same passion and love she displayed through her short life.”
Cox was shot and killed in an attack in West Yorkshire on 16 June.
The 41-year-old mother of two was shot three times and stabbed just in Birstall in her Batley & Spen constituency by a 52-year old local man named Thomas Mair.
