The World Health Organization (WHO) today (7 Jul) announced the launch of a “pre-emptive” vaccination campaign in the Congolese-Angolan border area in an effort to halt the yellow fever epidemic in the central African region and prevent the risk of further international spread.
WHO outbreaks director Bruce Aylward said the campaign would be “one of the largest yellow fever emergency response campaigns ever conducted” and will attempt to vaccinate over 15 million people in the Congolese capital Kinshasa and other border areas over the next 2 months. Aylward said his organization had “an unprecedented response” to a yellow fever outbreak in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the beginning of 2016, but the two-month push came in advance of the high season for transmission to “prevent explosive outbreaks in these major metropolises and potential international spread far beyond.”
WHO said the initial phase of the campaign would focus on districts where there is high movement of people and intense trade activities, particularly the northern border districts of Angola and targeted border districts in neighbouring countries. It noted that important gains in preventive vaccination campaigns had been achieved but the lack of sufficient funds for field operational activities remained a challenge in both countries.
