“We have just passed the tenth anniversary of the 2006 conflict and we now have ten year olds in South Lebanon who do not know what devastating war looks like. So now, let us work together to ensure they grow into adulthood with peace and stability. My undertaking to you during my period as Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL is that no effort will be spared to bring lasting peace and stability to this beautiful area of South Lebanon.”

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) received a new Force Commander on Friday (15 Jul). After 2 years of heading the mission, Italian Major General Luciano Portolano handed the reins over to Major General Michael Beary of Ireland in a ceremony at UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura.
Portolano said he was confident that General Beary would continue to strive towards achieving sustainable peace and stability for the people of South Lebanon.
Beary said as the tenth anniversary tenth anniversary of the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hizbullah was being marked, work must be done to ensure that the children who do not know war grow into adulthood with peace and stability. He said during his period as Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL, “no effort will be spared to bring lasting peace and stability to this beautiful area of South Lebanon.”
Major General Beary spent 10 years on overseas deployments, including in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, Lebanon, Uganda and Somalia. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Business Studies and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy. He is a graduate of the Command and Staff School of the Irish Defence Forces, and of the National War College at the National Defence University in Washington, D.C.
