Storyline

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, arrived Monday (18 Jul) in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, starting his two-day visit to discuss issues concerning human rights violations.

In Goma, he held talks with the Congolese officials and human rights civil society.

On Tuesday (19 Jul) in Bukavu, he met with Dr. Denis Mukwege who supports women victims of rape and sexual violence at Panzi Hospital.
Zeid also met with the victims of human rights violation. He said “I had a very productive discussion with Dr. Mukwege and Panzi Hospital and Foundation. I had a meeting with the victims of human rights violations, a very moving meeting I’ve to say. And I look forward in the next few days to be discussing all the issues concerning human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the senior officials in Kinshasa.”

The victims who receive treatment at the Panzi hospital displayed banners to pass their messages to the visiting envoy. They demanded justice for rape, sexual assault and gender based violence.
