“The straw poll is an indicative vote. It is to inform the candidates of where they stand in the race. It is to inform the Security Council members how the race might go on from here. From that point of view, I think the straw poll that we just had went smoothly, and I think it was a useful procedure.”

The United Nations (UN) Security Council held today (21 Jul) its first round of straw polls in the process of selecting a new Secretary-General for the international organization. Following the vote, Japanese ambassador Koro Bessho told reporters that the candidates would now be informed of the results by the permanent representatives of the countries that nominated them.
Bessho said the straw poll “went smoothly.” He said the vote was meant to inform the candidates of “where they stand in the race”.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s term is set to end at the end of 2016. The process of choosing a new Secretary-General has been made public for the first time in the organizations history. The twelve candidates that have emerged so far are Srgian Kerim, Vesna Pusic, Igor Luksic, Danilo Turk, Irina Bokova, Natalia Gherman, Antonio Guterres, Helen Clark, Vuk Jeremic, Susana Malcorra, Miroslav Lajcak, and Christiana Firgueres.
