“I feel as though the conversation about immigration and refugees is always seen through very narrow negative lenses. It’s refugees as terrorists, it’s. You know, immigrants as problems, and I don’t want to simplify things and say we shouldn’t talk about those things, because that’s important, but I feel that we should talk about other things as well. We should talk about how refugees are people, like us. And I think sometimes it is important to remember that in many ways we could be in that position as well.”

No country can build its economy at the expense of another country. That’s done. This is something that’s time has ended in my opinion.”

“Standing up for mothers in general, you know, I think being a mother is being the ultimate humanitarian. It teaches you to be selfless and to give to somebody else without expecting anything in return, and I think that’s what a true humanitarian is. So, I am happy to be here to represent that.
25. Pan right, Hala and her family
In commemoration of World Humanitarian Day (WHD), a Syrian mother of four called on the world to hold on to “that which unites us now more than ever: love, respect, freedom.”
Hala Kamil and her family were the focus of the “One Humanity” event today (19 Aug) at United Nations (UN) headquarters. The family was highlighted in a film which documented their journey out of Aleppo to Germany after Hala’s husband was captured by ISIL.
Hala said her hometown, Aleppo, from which she had fled stood today “just as a symbol for the misery which countless families around the world bear.” She said her city had become an example of “our collective failure to uphold our humanity and bring an end to this conflict.” Hala disagreed with those who think there are two worlds, “one for those who make decisions and one for those who bear the consequences.” She called people around the world to make their voices heard. She said families like her's may have lost their homes, but they have not lost their “ability to change this world.”
The event also featured performances and statements by many humanitarians, celebrities and advocates aimed at inspiring global citizens to continue to demand action to reach those affected by conflict, disaster and those in need of humanitarian assistance.
“Game of Thrones” star Natalie Dormer said she was here because she wanted “a world where women and girls are free to live their lives without of sexual and gender based violence and where perpetrators of sexual violence do not get away with their crimes. Dormer said, “Pledges are one thing, action is another” and called on leaders to take action.
Prior to the “One Humanity” event, UN officials and celebrity guests took part in what was referred to as “the Blue Carpet”. Speaking to Unifeed, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said she was honoured to be at the UN because the organization, “however flawed”, had also done many important humane things in the world. She said she felt the conversation about refugees was “always seen through a very narrow negative lens” and people should remember that refugees are people as well.
Actress Yasmine Al Massri said people throughout the Middle East were suffering to achieve their basic human rights. She said Syria in particular was a “wound for us all” because “you are watching children pay the price for other’s mistakes.” She said she wanted to tell people at the UN that it was “impossible for one place in the world to suffer without affecting other places.”
“The Voice” winner Alisan Porter said she wanted to stand up for mothers around the world because “being a mother is being the ultimate humanitarian.”
