Storyline

United Nations (UN) Envoy Staffan de Mistura said the talks between the United States and Russia on Syria set to take place tomorrow would “certainly” have an impact on the “political initiatives of the UN in order to relaunch the political process” to end the conflict in the country.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergej Lavrov and United States Secretary of State John Kerry are set to meet Friday in Geneva to discuss the Syrian conflict. Speaking to the press in Geneva today (25 Aug), de Mistura said he did not want to comment on those discussions.

De Mistura’s Special Advisor Jan Egeland said humanitarian convoys were ready to depart to Aleppo with Russia agreeing to a 48-hour humanitarian pause in the city. However, he said the convoys were waiting for security guarantees from other parties on the ground. He said for the first “48-hour weekly pause” the UN was prepared to send two 20-truck convoys to eastern Aleppo carrying enough food for 80,000 people.

Egeland said the pause would also be used to repair the electrical system in the southern part of the city. The plant serves 1.8 million people with their daily electrical needs and is used to pump water to both the eastern and western part of the city.
