The United Nations Human Right Office (OHCHR) called on the international community to establish an “international, independent body” to carry out comprehensive investigations in Yemen.
In a report released today (25 Aug), OHCHR listed a number of serious allegations of human rights violations and abuses committed by all sides to the Yemeni conflict including attacks on medical, educational, and religious facilities.
OHCHR’s Middle East chief Mohammad Ali Alnsour said the report also documented violations to the Convention on the Rights of Children including 500 cases of child recruitment, mainly by the Houthis, and air strikes on markets and civilians areas carried out by the Saudi-led Coalition.
The report also documented the killing of 3,799 civilian as well as over 6,700 injuries. OHCHR Human Rights Officer Amal Loubani said despite women and children being the most affected by the conflict, there was “no reason to believe that women or any other group have been systematically targeted.” However, OHCHR said in several documented military attacks, it was “unable to identify the presence of possible military objectives.”
