Storyline

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) said it detected an unusual seismic event in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today (9 Sep) at 0030 UTC as the country announced it had conducted another nuclear test.

Media reports indicated that the DPRK announced a successful test of a nuclear warhead which it says could be mounted onto ballistic missiles. If confirmed, this would be the second nuclear test conducted by the DPRK this year and the fifth since 2006.

CTBTO chief Lassina Zerbo said primary processing of the information collected by monitoring stations indicated an event larger then that detected in January 2016 which could translate into a “much bigger explossion.” He said, “If confirmed, this is again a breach to universally accepted norm against nuclear testing and I condemn this firmly.”

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano said if the test was confirmed, it was “in clear violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions and in complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community.” He urged the fully implement all relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the IAEA. He said his agency remained ready to contribute to the peaceful resolution of the DPRK nuclear issue by resuming its verification activities in the country “once a political agreement is reached among countries concerned.”
