3. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President, Turkey:
“If I stand here today before you, it is thanks to our nation’s brave and noble stance. It should never be forgotten that the failed coup in Turkey was aimed at global democracy as well.”
4. Wide shot, General Assembly Hall
5. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President, Turkey:
“I would like to call on all our friends to take the necessary measures quickly against the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO) in their countries for the future of their own people and their wellbeing. It is evident from our experience that if you do not fight against FETO now, tomorrow may be too late.”
6. Med shot, Syrian diplomat
7. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President, Turkey:
“I would like to call upon the rest of the world, and I would like to call on all of my European friends, who believe that the Syrian refugees are a direct and a clear danger for them. The barbed wire and the high walls will never provide you with the safety, security, and peace of mind that you seek. It is an effort in vein. The issue of Syrian refugees should be solved immediately and once and for all, otherwise we will never be able to prevent the irregular migration, social issues, and security risks imbedded within that issue.”
8. Wide shot, General Assembly Hall
9. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President, Turkey:
“In order for this to be possible, the officially-made safe zones should also be declared as no-fly zones. We have to have a very firm stance so that a no-fly zone will be possible for the protection and the security of the inhabitants of the region. Unfortunately the ceasefire, which we heavily invested efforts for its realisation, has failed. As you can clearly see, the ceasefire is no longer possible.”
10. Wide shot, General Assembly Hall
11. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President, Turkey:
“The Syrian regime has not allowed assistance under the supervision of the United Nations to reach the people of Aleppo who are in dire need. They are attacking the humanitarian aid convoys. The regime is condemning people to famine and to suffering in order to encourage them to surrender or die. The United Nations and the Security Council should no longer tolerate the regime’s policy.”

Storyline

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said he stood before the General Assembly today (20 Sep) thanks to his nation’s “brave and noble stance” against the failed coup attempt.

Addressing delegates, Erdoğan said the “Fethullahist Terrorist Organization” was behind the coup attempt in Turkey in July, which left more than 240 people dead. He said the group was a threat to “all 170 countries where it exists” and called on Turkey’s friends to act quickly against it “for the future of their own people and their wellbeing.”

The Turkish President said the Syrian people were being exhausted by the grip of “proxy wars”. He said his country opened its doors for over three million Syrian refugees and spent some $25 billion to respond to the humanitarian crisis. Speaking to those who “believe that the Syrian refugees are a direct and a clear danger for them”, Erdoğan said, “The barbed wire and the high walls will never provide you with the safety, security, and peace of mind that you seek.”

Erdoğan said the “Operation Euphrates Shield” being carried out by his country in northern Syria, has created “safe zones” in the region and gave confidence to the “moderate Syrian opposition.” He said Turkey was working to restore water and electricity services and called for the establishment of a “no-fly zone” to make that possible. He accused the Syrian government of carrying out the recent attack on an aid convoy headed to Aleppo. He told delegates, “as you can clearly see, the ceasefire is no longer possible.” Erdoğan said the United Nations and the Security Council “should no longer tolerate the regime’s policy” of “surrender or die.”
