United Nations leaders urged countries to transcend national interests to curb refugee large-scale suffering.
Speaking today (3 Oct) at the UN refugee agency’s annual Executive Committee meeting in Geneva, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon highlighted the fact that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has more than doubled – to 65 million – since he took office a decade ago.
Ban said “the numbers are staggering. Each one represents a human life. But this is not a crisis of numbers. It is a crisis of solidarity,” adding “we urgently need countries to transcend their national interests and come together in a forceful, global response.”
Taking up the theme, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi painted a stark picture of forced displacement.
Many of the ninety-eight countries at the conference host large refugee or displaced populations.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugee pointed out the impact on those states was enormous, but also that forced displacement had taken center stage, worldwide.
Grandi said “the right to asylum and the values of tolerance and solidarity that are its foundation – are undermined by xenophobia, nationalist rhetoric and political discourse linking refugees with security concerns and terrorism.”
He also pointed out the commitments adopted by the 193 member States at las month’s UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants.
Grandi said “the New York Declaration provides a platform for - clearly articulating that today’s refugee crisis cannot be managed by a single state alone and calling for predictable, collaborative international responses based on solidarity and responsibility sharing.” In response, he proposed more development investments by various groups, agencies and even individuals.
Funds in 2016 for UNHCR are at US$3.7 billion – just 50 percent of the total funding required.
