Storyline

Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti Tuesday morning (4 Oct) with torrential wind and rain.

According to some meteorologists, the category 4 storm is packing 145 mph winds and could drop up to 40 inches in the mountainous areas. Winds and floods have already lead to the destruction of several homes and a number of injuries. Reports indicate that at least four people have died and thousands more are seeking shelter.

Matthew could create yet another humanitarian disaster in the western hemisphere’s poorest nation. The country is still struggling to recover from a devastating earthquake which struck in 2010 as 55,000 people still live in shelters.

The United Nations (UN) received an official request yesterday to assist the Haitian authorities in the emergency response following the passage of hurricane Matthew. A UN disaster assessment team had arrived on Sunday in preparation for the storm and the Organization is planning to launch a flash appeal in response to the expected humanitarian crisis. The UN had already pre-positioned food and non-food items ready for distribution and was coordinating with humanitarian aid agencies.
