“The United States has a leadership role to play in combating climate change. The Secretary-General was extremely pleased with the way he’s been able to work over the last decades with the Obama administration, and before that, with the administration of George W. Bush, who provided critical support at critical points over the last ten years. I think the Secretary General was present in a very symbolic meeting in China where he was presented with the instruments of ratification of both the US and China together. We hope that whoever occupies the White House in 2017 will continue that leadership role for the United States.”

A United Nations (UN) spokesperson said ahead of Friday's Paris Agreement coming into force that this "is a day we have all been waiting for" adding that several countries this week have already ratified the agreement.

At a press briefing today (3 Nov) Stéphane Dujarric told reporters that this would bring the total number of States having ratified the agreement to 96.

Asked about the possibility that the United States(US) under a Donald Trump administration might want to pull out of the Paris Agreement, Dujarric said that the US “has a leadership role to play in combating climate change” and noted that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been able to work with the both the Obama and Bush administrations.

He recalled that the Secretary General “was present in a very symbolic meeting in China where he was presented with the instruments of ratification of both the US and China together.”

Dujarric said “we hope that whoever occupies the White House in 2017 will continue that leadership role for the United States.”

As a candidate, Donald Trump has vowed to pull out of the Paris Agreement if elected.

The agreement specifies that a party may not withdraw from it within the first three years following its entry into force.
