(Soundbite begins under cutaway) “I think the High Commissioner for Human Rights spoke clearly within his mandate as he does forcefully all over the world when he feels he needs to raise his voice. I’m not going to speculate. As I said the election is over. There is now a transition. We have a President-elect and we very much hope we can continue to count on the deep cooperation and the leadership of the United States within the United Nations system.”

Storyline

United Nations (UN) spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the “rhetoric” of the United States (US) presidential election was “over” and focus would now turn to what was being said post-election.

Responding to a question today (10 Nov) on US President-elect Donald Trump saying the UN was “a useless organization” during his campaign for the presidency, Dujarric said, “the election is over; the rhetoric of the election is over; we will now focus on what is being said post-election.”

The spokesperson said a change in the administration of any country, “especially in the country that is the largest donor to the United Nations,” gave way to some thinking on what the impact could be on the work of the organization." He said only two days had passed since the elections took place and the organization had to wait meet with the team that would form around Trump.

Asked if criticism directed towards Trump during his election campaign by UN officials, namely UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, would affect his relationship with the organization, Dujarric said Zeid “spoke clearly within his mandate as he does forcefully all over the world when he feels he needs to raise his voice.” He hoped the UN could “continue to count on the deep cooperation and the leadership of the United States within the United Nations system.”
