At least 2 million children and their families in the capital Damascus and surrounding areas continue to suffer with limited or no access to running water, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases especially among children.
On December 22, fighting in Wadi Barada area, where much of the city’s water supply originates, resulted in water scarcity. Since then, 120 wells in and around Damascus previously rehabilitated and equipped by UNICEF have been the sole source of water for the entire city.
UNICEF has already provided generator sets and is delivering 15,000 liters of fuel daily to increase water pumping capacity, and is trucking water to 85 priority schools in Damascus and Rural Damascus.
