Storyline

The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) condemned continuing violence in South Sudan and called “upon all the parties involved to cease all military activity.”

Speaking at a JMEC meeting in South Sudan’s capital Juba today (8Feb), chairperson Festus Mogae said he was "dismayed at the continuing conflict in Equatoria and the appalling outbreak of the violence of in Wau and Upper Nile over the past two weeks.” He demanded unfettered humanitarian access and highlighted reports of torture, sexual violence and other human rights abuses in parts of the country.

To bolster security in the capital Juba and its surroundings, Mogae appealed for the urgent deployment of a 4,000-strong Regional Protection Force as approved by the UN Security Council.

The meeting was to take stock of the process of implementing the peace agreement and set out expectations and objectives for 2017 and was attended by representatives of the transitional government, stakeholders and donors.
