Storyline

United Nations nuclear watchdog (IAEA) chief Yukiya Amano expressed serious concern today (6 Mar) regarding North Korea’s (DPRK) nuclear programme adding that it was “deeply regrettable” that the country showed no indication of its willingness to comply with Security Council resolutions.

Speaking to the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, Amano called upon the DPRK to fully comply with its obligations under Security Council resolutions and promptly cooperate with his Agency. He said the Agency remained ready to play an essential role in verifying the DPRK’s nuclear programme.

Turning to Iran, Amano said the IAEA had been verifying and monitoring Iran’s implementation of its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for over a year now.

He said the Agency verified in January the removal of excess centrifuges and infrastructure from the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant to the Fuel Enrichment Plant at Natanz, where they were now stored under the IAEA’s continuous monitoring. Amano said the IAEA continued to verify the non-diversion of nuclear material declared by Iran adding that “evaluations regarding the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities” in Iran continued.

The JCPOA is an agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. The deal was reached between Iran and the P5+1, which includes the 5 Permanent Members of the Security Council (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States) and Germany.
