I want you to be champions of peace, champions of peace in your universities, but also champions of peace in your neighborhoods, in your communities, in your states, wherever you go take the message of peace and preach it and convert as many as you can.”

“Through sport we can impact the spirit of sportsmanship, that ability to understand that when I disagree with you it doesn’t have to result in physical fight. And managing a tournament of these matches for young men like this is a test of their leadership, of their managerial quality, and as you can see from this stadium today it is obvious that they have succeeded beyond even their wildest dream.”

Amid ululations, cheers and blowing of vuvuzelas, the final game of an inter-university football tournament was played Wednesday (15 Mar).
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) sponsored the two-week sporting activity for university students under the theme “Sport for Peace.”
During the event, South Sudan’s Minister of Higher Education, Deng Deng Hoc, said youth sports are a vehicle for achieving sustainable peace as it helps strengthen the bonds of goodwill and trust among South Sudanese citizens.

Reuben Inaju, a Public Information Officer for UNMISS, said the mission’s outreach unit uses creative activities to reach out to the grassroots population, and that the inter-university peace league is one of those activities.
Inaju said managing a tournament of this magnitude for young men (and women), is a test of their leadership and managerial qualities, adding that the core aim is to see how these youth can put their differences aside and work as a team.

After the final whistle was blown, the winners jumped onto the stage chanting and lifting their hard-won trophy.
The goalkeeper of Juba University said that football is a model of peace, calling on the South Sudanese community to live in Peace

A traditional performance from the South Sudan Acholi dance, as well as performances from the Ethiopian and Nepalese battalions closed the event.
